Redbalifrog Ubaldus Unicorn Inspiration

This Redbalifrog blog brings a little inspiration for the Redbalifrog Ubaldus Unicorn.

The Ohm Beads Unicorny is launching as part of the brand’s September releases and will be the latest limited edition glass design. There’s quite a lot of excitement surrounding that bead and despite the fact I’m not really a pink kinda girl, I’m thoroughly looking forward to it’s arrival.

There was quite some confusion last week as a portion of collectors believed those beads were newly launched. For those of you already enthusiastic for the idea of unicorn bracelets, I’m revisiting quite an old Redbalifrog bead today. His name is Ubaldus Unicorn and I feel he’s the best of the unicorn designs from the large brands. He retails at $33, €28.50 or £25.50 and fits all of the major charm bracelet brands.

Redbalifrog Ubaldus Unicorn

Ubaldus is purely the head and neck portion of the unicorn. I’m aware some collectors don’t love that style (disembodied animals that is) and I completely understand the sentiment. I will say however, most of the equine beads I’ve ever encountered are so anatomically wrong in terms of their legs that I’d actually prefer artists to focus on the head. The Trollbeads Unicorn looks mangled. The Redbalifrog Pegasus also has legs that aren’t quite right though nothing on the level of the Trollbeads version. The additional advantage of focusing on just the head is the detailing that can be included. There’s texturing on the horn, though I’d not describe it as twisted and there’s a curl to the mane.

For the featured bracelet I wanted to create a forest theme both because of the upcoming release of the Redbalifrog Woodlands collection and the apparent natural habitat of unicorns. I’ve used multiple Trollbeads Golden Rutilated Quartz beads (which I’m more in love with than ever since seeing some of the variations in person) and then some green beads. Do please note that nearly all of the stone beads on this bracelet are for sale over on my Facebook page. Nearly all of the silver is from the Redbalifrog collection, including the Peacock Wrapped Feather which is one of my favourite designs from the line. There’s a bead index at the end of if you’re unsure of any specific charm.

Redbalifrog Ubaldus Unicorn Summary

I consider myself extremely difficult to please when it comes to equine themed charms or beads. I absolutely can’t help but look at the intricacies and feel disappointed on some level. On the other hand I then feel guilty as particularly in regards to the limbs, they’re notoriously difficult to capture correctly. It’s so common that people send me pictures of horse themed beads they’ve found or indeed ask why I never wear any. For the benefit of those who don’t know me, I’ve ridden since I was three and I literally do not remember a time where horses haven’t been a massive feature in my life.

Ubaldus may not be a fully body representation but his head and neck are well proportion and for me it’s a huge advantage that the limbs aren’t actually included. He remains by far the best of the unicorn beads I’ve personally encountered and though I’ve styled him here towards more of an enchanted forest them, picture him on a bangle with a couple of Unicorny glass. It’s also worth noting that as is typical of Redbalifrog, he’s a good size and weight so he won’t disappear between the glass either.

As always I love to hear from my readers. What are your thoughts on the Redbalifrog Ubaldus Unicorn bead? Hit the comments and let me know!
